When the wrestling program at Brookfield High School (BHS) in Brookfield, Mo., took a turn for the better, members of the Brookfield FFA Chapter found it a struggle to show their passions for agriculture during National FFA Week each year.
With many state-qualifying wrestlers competing each year, it became difficult for FFA members to balance supporting the wrestling program at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Wrestling Championship and participating in their chapter’s events during National FFA Week. Year after year, members were missing activities Brookfield FFA had to offer, so chapter officers decided it was time for a change.
Inclusion and adaptability were the main focuses when creating a new tradition for the chapter. This led them to change “FFA Week” to “FFA Month” so members could participate in their favorite events without missing out. Members decided to host one event and spirit day per week.
“I love that we have a unique way to keep our students involved in our chapter during this exciting and busy month!” says Brookfield FFA Secretary and BHS wrestler Lilly Lindsay.

Continuing the Tradition
Each year, the first week of February brings lots of joy and passion. On the first Friday of the month, members are granted the opportunity to drive their tractors to school and participate in a schoolwide parade—all while dressed up for spirit day.
In the days leading up to the event, younger students in the Brookfield R-III School District learn about agriculture and tractors by competing in a coloring contest. The following Sunday, FFA members gather at a local church to worship with some of their peers.
Members focus on agricultural awareness and appreciation during the third week of the month. Brookfield FFA gathers for an entire school day to teach young students about agriculture in an event called “Food For America.”
“I like seeing all of the cool animals,” says Brookfield elementary student Kade Switzer. “I just wish we got to see baby bears! I really love seeing the dogs and calves the high schoolers bring.”
Following Food For America, members focus on the next event on the agenda: the Brookfield FFA Community Appreciation Breakfast. After mailing invites to local businesses and farmers, members gather in the early hours of the day to prepare a breakfast for not only the community but also teachers and supporters who make their mission possible.
At the end of the month, participating members are rewarded with an eventful trip to show the chapter’s appreciation toward its members.
Although FFA Week may look a little different for Brookfield FFA, it enjoys including all of its members in festivities. Members now have the opportunity to cheer on their colleagues at the MSHSAA Wrestling State Championship and participate in “FFA Month” each February.
