When you think of someone involved in a poultry Supervised Agricultural Experience, you typically imagine showing chickens or raising birds for eggs or meat. However, the approach can be quite different.
Peyton Gay from the Deane Bozeman FFA Chapter in Florida cares for a threatened species known as the Sebastopol goose, which is recognized for its curly feathers and loud noises. His biggest challenge was determining the ideal incubation method for their eggs, which required extensive trial and error. Ultimately, Gay discovered that a humidifier with increased water levels works best.
“My SAE focuses on protecting the birds during breeding and rearing, with the goal of boosting the population of this threatened species,” he says.
His passion for working with these geese is evident, as Gay is involved with a farm called Pines and Pastures.
“Peyton became interested in the Sebastopol goose after researching them one day on the internet,” the farm’s owner says. “He saw they were listed on the ‘threatened’ list and wanted to try to help. In 2019, the farm bought 11 goslings, and his gaggle has grown from there.”
Gay is one special agriculturist, and his unique passion is extremely inspiring to FFA members everywhere!
