Anabel Wadsworth from the Ashland FFA Chapter in Maine has been taking care of her horse, Desperado, since she was 12 years old. Now, at 17, she has used her equine knowledge to her advantage in FFA competitions.

Getting To Know Desperado

Desperado is a Tennessee Walking Horse. This breed of horse is known for a smooth walking gait.  He stands around 15 hands tall, which is equivalent to 5 feet.  A “hand” is the term used to measure horses and equals 4 inches.

Desperado is gentle and gets along well with people and other animals. He also lives with a miniature horse named Rapunzel. Wadsworth said Desperado is both a pet and a farm animal.

Wadsworth has owned Desperado for about a year. Caring for him includes feeding grains and keeping a supply of hay, clean water and plenty of room to move. Wadsworth is quite knowledgeable about the care of horses.

Owning Desperado was a key advantage for Wadsworth during the horse judging competition held during the Maine FFA State Convention in May 2024. When asked if owning a horse helped during the competition, Wadsworth says her hands-on experience with a horse definitely aided her to victory. She won the horse judging competition as the first-place individual.

Based on her daily experience with horses, Wadsworth intends to submit a proficiency award in equine science in 2025. Her care of Desperado will help her complete the application.
