An impactful community service project often starts with a decision to take action and make a difference. Joseph Stefani, a Placer FFA member from Auburn, Calif., did just that.
Stefani has raised and showed livestock since he was 7 years old, serving as a constant figure in the show ring during the Gold Country Fair. During the fair’s livestock auction each year, Stefani watched as Feed the Hungry of Auburn, a local nonprofit, purchased animals and received donations that were used to provide high-quality protein to food banks in the area.
Although the nonprofit serves a vital need in his community, Stefani learned it can always use additional food donations of beef and pork. So, he got to work.
“I wanted to make a difference, and the best way to do that was to raise more pigs,” he says. “I was able to get the feed donated, and I had the knowledge and space. It was just a matter of spending a little extra time.”
In addition to his show animals, Stefani raised five more pigs to market weight, then donated the processed meat to Feed the Hungry of Auburn. Although this came with its share of challenges, he persevered, knowing his efforts would be worthwhile.
“There’s a bit more work involved than I originally expected, but it’s a great experience,” he says. “I’m getting better at it.”
Growing Potential
Stefani’s actions are leaving an impact already, but he knows he can do more. He’s hoping to grow this project by recruiting his fellow FFA members.
“We’ve already secured feed donations, so all it takes is some time and effort,” he says.
He also hopes the project will serve as a great learning experience for his chapter. According to Placer FFA advisor Haylee Kidd, 90% of her 250-member chapter doesn’t come from a traditional farming background.
“Not as many members are involved in raising livestock, so this is a great opportunity to try something new,” Stefani says. “It’s also a great way to serve the community at the same time.”
