Thanks to Grants for Growing, a competitive grant program sponsored by corporate partner Tractor Supply Co., Kelliher FFA in Minnesota established a yearlong meat processing class known as Midwest Meats. Amy Mastin, the chapter’s advisor, and Courtney Moyer, a family and consumer sciences (FCS) teacher at Kelliher Public School, used grant funds to purchase supplies and create hands-on learning opportunities related to animal and food science. Through the class, students are deepening their understanding of food safety, cut identification and grading, marketing, processing, packaging and entrepreneurship. The class also recently earned its custom processing certification, which enables students to further apply their skills and knowledge in real-world settings.
