Public speaking is a core component of the National FFA Organization. Regardless of what career you choose, being able to speak confidently will help set you up for success.

However, this requires extensive preparation and practice. Just ask Kade Lawrence of Canyon FFA in Texas. He won the 2023 National FFA Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event, which is sponsored by Elanco, Rabo AgriFinance Nationwide and Tractor Supply Co., and believes effective communication is an invaluable life skill everyone should strive for.

Read on for Lawrence’s five P’s of public speaking so you can also write and present an award-winning speech that leaves a lasting impression.

1. Be positive.

Listeners prefer to hear about an enjoyable experience with a happy ending. Keep your mannerisms light, positive and upbeat.

2. Be passionate.

Choose a topic you feel enthusiastic about and express your passions through your presentation. After all, if you find a topic dull, imagine how it’ll feel to your audience.

3. Be particular.

A well-developed speech is not shy of specifics, but rather attentive to details. Use information, evidence and facts to support your topic and keep the audience engaged from start to finish.

4. Be poised.

It’s advantageous to practice your speech exactly how you’ll deliver it. A composed, dignified and self-assured speaker has the confidence to deliver a captivating speech.

5. Be presentable.

A neat and professional appearance makes all the difference. In addition to establishing a strong first impression, it conveys your seriousness and professionalism.
