From the Editor: Make This Year Count

As we ring in a new year, it’s common to set goals, sometimes referred to as resolutions, outlining what we hope to achieve in the next 12 months. Some people even select a word to reframe their mindset and help establish new habits or intentions. Regardless of how we choose to approach it, this can be a time to reset our focus, reaffirm our priorities and reinvent ourselves — but only if we choose to.

Fortunately, FFA provides numerous avenues to develop our potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success. Perhaps this means you decide to run for an office, attend a leadership conference or update your chapter’s Program of Activities. It could also include sitting next to a new face at a chapter meeting or saying “thank you” to someone who’s shaped your FFA journey.

This issue includes additional resources to help you maximize the upcoming year. “The Feed” section outlines tips for deepening your relationships, leveling up your leadership potential and expanding your supervised agricultural experience (SAE).

In “Wired for Growth” on page 24, you’ll feel inspired as you read about how Oregon FFA alumnus Evan Vander Stoep helped address a need within his chapter and community. On page 30, “Hands-on Education” showcases how Brody Del Deo, Julianna Dufresne and Brian Thornhill are learning new skills through their specialized education at Bristol County Agricultural High School.

Looking back, I wish I could tell my younger self (who just so happened to be a Missouri FFA member) that everyone’s path in FFA looks and feels different. As you approach what lies ahead in 2024, remember it’s OK if your aspirations and accomplishments differ from those around you. How you choose to utilize the next 365 days is up to you, so I encourage you to make each and every one of them count!

It’s Good to be Back

A few weeks before I stepped into this role as editor of FFA New Horizons magazine, I found a drawer filled with past issues I’d received in high school. Talk about a full circle moment! From my hometown to our nation’s capital, Lucas Oil Stadium and beyond, I’m grateful for all I’ve encountered while wearing and representing the corduroy jacket. As an FFA alumna, it’s my honor to continue experiencing the lasting impacts of our organization, and it’s a joy to share the stories of its talented members, alumni and supporters.
