If you’re looking to apply what you’re learning in the classroom in a hands-on, tactical way, there’s no better place to start than with a National FFA Career Development Event (CDE).

Not only will you gain real-world experience and improve your critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills, but you’ll also have the opportunity to explore potential career paths in agriculture.

“CDEs are essential for preparing the next generation of leaders in agriculture to enter the workforce,” says Carol Herl, National FFA CDE/LDE education specialist.

Looking for the perfect fit? Kickstart your search with these six opportunities.

1. Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE

Sponsored by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, Caterpillar, Kubota Tractor Corporation and TORO, this CDE is best suited for FFA members interested in careers in areas such as welding, machinery management and agricultural engineering.

In addition to solving a multi-system agricultural problem scenario, competitors prepare a report and complete a written exam about compact equipment, electricity, environment and natural resources, machinery and equipment and structures.

2. Environmental & Natural Resources CDE

If you love the great outdoors and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, try this competition. Test your skills in Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation, soil science, water and waste management and wildlife conservation, all while navigating real-life scenarios that involve environmental threats.

Sponsored by Ducks Unlimited, EDP Renewables, Invenergy and John Deere, this CDE is designed to prepare FFA members for careers in conservation science, forestry and environmental engineering.

3. Floriculture CDE

In this event, which is sponsored by Ball Horticultural Company, Bayer, Nutrien Ag Solutions and Wilbur-Ellis, members identify plants, equipment and plant diseases, design and construct flower arrangements and show proficiency in flower propagation and the preparation of floral and foliage products for sale.

Competing in this CDE could help you prepare for a future role as a greenhouse and field production manager, garden center and floral shop manager or floral design manager.

4. Meats Evaluation & Technology CDE

Sponsored by Cargill, Culver’s, Hormel Foods and the U.S. Poultry Association, this CDE is geared toward members interested in working in the meat animal industry, including processing, production, technical service, sales and marketing and quality assurance.

During the event, competitors evaluate beef carcasses for quality and yield grade, identify meat cuts and place carcasses, formulate an order for a least-cost product and identify wholesale and/or retail cuts of meat.

5. Milk Quality & Products CDE

FFA members competing in this CDE examine and evaluate samples of milk for abnormalities, identify cheeses and determine their country of origin, and demonstrate an understanding of milk and dairy foods promotion and marketing.

This event, which is sponsored by Cargill, Culver’s, Domino’s Pizza and Kerry Taste and Nutrition, helps prepare FFA members for careers in dairy quality control, milk and cheese production and dairy management.

6. Veterinary Science CDE

Interested in caring for small and large animals as a veterinarian or veterinary technician, farm manager or animal trainer? Consider trying this competition that’s sponsored by Cargill, Elanco, Merck Animal Health and Zoetis.

FFA members must demonstrate general knowledge of animals, determine correct doses of medication and identify parasites, instruments and animal breeds. Additionally, competitors showcase their knowledge of animal care through extensive hands-on practicums.
