This time of year is known for giving (and receiving) gifts, so it’s important to adopt an attitude of gratitude. A simple “thank you” to someone can have a powerful impact, and there are countless approaches you can use when expressing your appreciation.

Read on for five ways to thank others this season.

1. Write a heartfelt thank-you note or card. Although it may be faster to send an email or text message, taking time to write a handwritten message speaks volumes in our data-driven world.

2. Volunteer your time. Whether it’s preparing a meal, completing a chore or providing an act of service, set aside a couple hours to do something nice for the person you’re grateful for.

3. Show up with an unexpected delight. Bring the person their favorite coffee, sweet treat, flowers or something else you know they like. (Spoiler alert: It will make you feel good, too.)

4. Treat someone to a fun event. Spend quality time with the person by inviting them to an outing they enjoy, such as a new movie, play, sporting event, parade or concert.

5. Create a shared gratitude journal. This easy, fun activity is one you can do with family members or friends, and it gives each person the opportunity to participate. To get started, jot down a list of things you’re grateful for, then pass the journal around and take turns sharing answers.
