The holidays can be a festive and exciting time of year. But between the break from school, the distractions of the season and the extra commitments from family and community, getting back into the groove can be tough. As FFA chapters reconnect after this much-appreciated time off, use these three ideas to kick-start the new year.
Set Goals for the First Day Back
Consider treating the first day back from winter break the same way you treat the first day of school. Setting a routine and rebuilding rapport are important, but establishing SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based) goals for the first days back can be a game changer. Whether you want to remind members to use the chapter hashtag on social channels or increase the number of sign-ups for National FFA Week activities, setting small goals can reignite enthusiasm for the blue and gold.
Start with a Clean Slate
FFA alumni, supporters and agricultural education teachers know that preparation is extremely important in any situation. Make the transition back to the classroom smooth by taking preemptive measures before the holidays begin. Try to wrap up any major projects or activities before members leave for vacation. In doing so, you can avoid reviewing topics and ideas that were covered weeks earlier and move on to new projects and activities.
Spark Curiosity
Many chapters have a reporter or historian and a vast archive of media to pull from. Posting pictures throughout your space of FFA activities that only happen in the spring semester can show how past members have used the final months of school to take part in contests, attend conventions, run for office and receive awards. Displaying visual proof of these previous events can drive anticipation and participation for the upcoming activities.
No matter what actions the chapter may take, combatting the post-holiday blues is important for every member. Strive to find ways to encourage collaboration and remind classmates just how much fun FFA can be.
