Under the twinkling lights of the Ferris wheel and amid the smell of funnel cakes in the air, a county or state fair is magic. In addition to making memories that last a lifetime, the fair is also an opportunity to advocate for agriculture. Check out these 10 ways you can use your fair involvement as a stage for advocacy.
- Become — and stay — informed. Ahead of the fair, stay up to date on the issues you care about. Remaining aware of important issues impacting agriculture will help you know when to act and who to speak with.
- Know your ask. When it’s time to advocate, you may only have a minute to capture attention and make your point. Outline three key points that you want fairgoers to remember and always refer back to them.
- Introduce yourself to officials. Many lawmakers take time to visit fairs and need to hear from their constituents about issues that matter to them. Review their public calendar and schedule time to discuss your concerns or solutions.
- Find your type of action. Are you more confident through email, over the phone or in person? Pick what best suits you and get started. Make phone calls for your fair board, attend town hall meetings, sign a petition or join a fair advisory group.
- Be sincere. You don’t have to be the expert on everything agriculture while at the fair. But you must be certain that everything you do say is the truth.
- Build your networks. Visit a new exhibition barn or attend a new livestock show to connect with decision makers and influencers who will help promote your story and your message.
- Ask questions. People love to feel heard. Ask farmers about their experiences, clarify a confusing statement from fairgoers or ask for additional information about a subject.
- Master the art of the follow-up. Following up with fairgoers lets them know you’re interested in continuing to work with them. Be persistent, but respectful. Whether it’s a simple thank-you note or a chance to remind them about your conversation, stay connected.
- Use fair hashtags. Chances are your fair is using a hashtag to drive attention to the event on social media. Know which hashtags are being used and incorporate them into your social posts around the event.
- Have fun. Advocating can be hard and exhausting work, and undertaking social or political change takes time. Enjoying what you do is paramount in fostering long-term change. Remember, your passion will shine through in all that you do.
