A new supervised agricultural experience (SAE) opportunity focused on combating worldwide hunger issues helps FFA members put the last line of the organization’s motto, “Living to Serve,” into action.

Known as the International Agricultural Development, this type of project is a collaboration between the National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education (NASAE) and Growing Hope Globally, a nonprofit that connects rural U.S. communities with smallholder farmers in developing countries.

The International Agricultural Development SAE is also part of the SAE for All program that aims to ensure all members take part in an SAE through both foundational and immersion projects. As a result, members have access to an SAE for All career kit, “A Guide to International Agricultural Development.”

The project defines international agricultural development, lists possible careers in the sector and the core skills required to obtain those careers, and provides student activity resources.

Although the kit includes project ideas and examples to address hunger issues, members can to create their own immersion experiences that help meet a need in their community.

“Hunger is an issue everywhere, both in the U.S. and abroad, and by exploring an SAE in this area and learning more about the career opportunities in international agricultural development, we hope FFA members will see how they can make a difference,” says Austin Large, NASAE regional vice president and executive director of the Texas FFA Association.
