The Lebanon FFA Chapter in Indiana recently organized a heartwarming event, “Snack & Chat,” that connected high school students and senior citizens for an afternoon of fun, games and treats at the Crown Pointe Senior Community Center. Coordinated by Lebanon FFA Co-Sentinels Garrett Adams, a freshman, and Owen Bigler, a senior, the event aimed to foster community and create intergenerational connections.

Planning the Perfect Recipe for Success
The Lebanon FFA Chapter recognized that some residents of local nursing homes can no longer prepare treats themselves. This event provided an opportunity for members to interact with residents, build genuine connections and brighten their day by making these treats together.
“I went because I loved visiting nursing homes with my dad as a kid,” said Lebanon High School senior Abbie Gulliams. “I enjoyed talking to the residents and learning about them. I learned how much visiting people can brighten their day.”

Planning the event required weeks of coordination. Adams and Bigler collaborated with their fellow officers and Amy Bigler, Crown Pointe’s activity director, to maximize the fun. After setting a date and time, they applied for a National FFA Day of Service Grant, which would allow members and residents to enjoy the event without the financial burden of supplying the treats.
“I enjoy making the community happy,” said freshman Jacob Johnston. “I enjoyed talking to the residents, learning about their day and year and playing games with them.”
Making Sweet Memories
The “Snack & Chat” concept was simple: Engage FFA members with senior residents through games and treat preparation. The games were organized by Bigler, who is passionate about bringing generations together. Simultaneously, FFA members prepared easy-to-make treats like “Puppy Chow,” no-bake cookies and chocolate-covered pretzels.
“[My mom’s job] entails having fun with a bunch of old people all day. She takes her people to the store and around town to where they need to go. Everybody loves her, and they all say she is the best,” Owen Bigler said. “This event inspired me to be positive in the way I look at things. These elderly people look at everything through such a positive lens. After only two hours of time together, they were telling us how this is the most fun they have ever had. The positive energy is moving!”
Adams added the event’s overall purpose was to positively impact the community. “This event allowed the residents to break their routine and enjoy themselves with the FFA members,” he said. “It was also a great opportunity for our members to build relationships with the residents and each other in a fun way.”

A Recipe for Connection
Although the chapter previously visited nursing homes for games and holiday card distribution, this event focused on making treats — a highly interactive and beneficial activity. Recognizing that some residents receive fewer visitors, especially after the holidays, Lebanon FFA members hoped this event would evoke fond memories and create a nostalgic experience.
“Talking to the residents and playing their games was fun,” said Jovani, a freshman. “I learned a lot, including to never give up on your dreams, no matter what.”

Continuing the ‘Living to Serve’ Journey
The “Snack & Chat” event proved a resounding success, leaving a positive impact on both Lebanon FFA members and Crown Pointe residents. The combination of intergenerational connections and shared treats brightened everyone’s day and instilled valuable lessons about community in the students.
The Lebanon FFA Chapter looks forward to continuing to create opportunities like this focused on building lasting connections and making a positive impact on the community.
