Rylie Walsh, a member of the Princeville FFA Chapter in Illinois, applied for and received a $5,000 National FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Grant. Walsh plans to use this grant to fuel the future of her dairy cattle herd, as it will serve as an opportunity to kick-start her record book and begin a new era of business.
“I applied for this grant through National FFA and filled out the application online,” Walsh says, emphasizing the simplicity of this process and how any member can ask their advisor to help complete the application.
Walsh’s SAE includes showing Jersey cattle at the county and state levels. “I chose this project because my grandpa had a passion for showing, and he has influenced me immensely,” she adds. “I’ve learned how to work hard with each animal to help them reach their highest potential.”
Walsh hopes to purchase hay bale rings, new show supplies for the upcoming season, feed and supplements for her cattle. She also recognizes the impact SAEs can have on FFA members and communities.
“[They teach] people about agriculture,” she adds. “During fairs, many people come up to my calves and pet them. During this time, I take the opportunity to teach the public about livestock.”
