On March 24, 2023, the city of Amory, Miss., was hit by a devastating tornado that left a trail of destruction.
Families had to pick up the pieces of what used to be their homes. Two people lost their lives. Thousands of homes and businesses, including the Amory Humane Society, were wiped away in the blink of an eye.
The Aftermath
On the night of the tornado, the humane society was housing 68 animals. Thankfully, all of them made it out unscathed; however, the facility itself faced serious destruction.
After this tragedy, Amory Humane Society staff members didn’t stop working hard. Although they were forced to move into a facility a fraction of the size, they continued to care for animals daily.
It’s been a year and eight months since the tornado, but the humane society has still not gotten back to where it once was. With unlimited needs and barely any funding, it’s been hard to keep the doors open. But in these trying times, the community has banded together and stayed strong.
Living to Serve
The Hamilton FFA Chapter showed its support of the humane society by helping brainstorm initiatives to save it.
For example, members made serving their community a priority by selling hot chocolate and homemade dog treats, with proceeds going to the humane society as part of the annual Santa Paws event. During this event, community members can take pictures with Santa Claus and adorable pets.
In the future, Hamilton FFA plans to do everything in its power to bring awareness and support its local humane society. If you’re interested in showing your support, learn more about the Amory Humane Society and make a donation here.
