Mowing lawns is more than a hobby for Lebanon FFA Member Owen Bigler.
Planting the Seed
OB Lawns, which was founded in 2022 as a family business, took on new life last year when Bigler decided to take ownership and expand. By creating a Facebook page and distributing flyers door-to-door, his hard work soon paid off when the phone began ringing with inquiries for lawn care services.
Through his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), Bigler has learned how to run a business and manage customer inquiries. While the financial gains are rewarding, it’s the process of building and growing his business that truly excites him.
Charting a New Course
Bigler’s success with OB Lawns has charted a new course for the future. Initially planning a career in animal science, he was inspired by his entrepreneurial journey to pursue a degree in turf management at Purdue College of Agriculture.
Outside of work, Bigler is a double-sport athlete in tennis and baseball and is deeply involved in organizations like FFA, where he serves as his chapter’s sentinel. He’s also involved in other organizations like student council.
Laying Down the Lawns
The process at OB Lawns is both straightforward and effective.
“When I receive a text from a potential customer, I offer a free quote and schedule a time to visit,” Bigler says. “I also ask if they’d like to be present during the service to ensure everything meets their expectations. Once we confirm the price and availability, I add them to my schedule.”
Equipped for Success and Future Growth
Bigler’s inventory includes essential equipment such as a truck and trailer, a 34-inch stand-on mower, two weed eaters and two blowers. This setup enables him to handle a variety of land care needs efficiently. Bigler aims to hire an employee to meet growing demands and continue expanding his customer base.
