Southmont FFA placed third in the National FFA Soil Judging Competition.

Within the past few years, Southmont FFA in Indiana has had great success with competitions and leadership representation.

Southmont FFA members appeared in the Skillathon national competition, where they placed 13th, as well as a third-place finish in the National FFA Soil Judging Competition (pictured above) and a fifth-place finish in the National FFA Floriculture Career Development Event (CDE). Additionally, Caden Sixberry served as the 2023-24 Indiana FFA state treasurer, Clair Simpson was a part of the National FFA Chorus and Kelsey Thompson is a 2024-25 FFA in the USA reporter sharing stories nationwide.

Although winning is good, it means nothing without understanding what it took to get there. After all, looking at the bigger picture is essential to self-growth. Southmont’s average class size is 110 students in rural Indiana; therefore, its numbers can be small.

Nevertheless, when the chapter comes together and works hard, it accomplishes the unthinkable. Understanding that the greatest limit often lies in your mind has helped lead the Mounties to countless victories. Working hard for the betterment of yourself and your team creates trust like a family.

As Phil Jackson said, “The strength of the team is each individual member. Each member is the strength of the team.” We are only as strong as those around us. Developing a team mindset rather than focusing on oneself has greatly improved this program. No person is left behind, and they approach everything with a united front as Southmont FFA.

What have you done to become a better teammate? Do you look out for what’s best for everyone in the group? If someone is falling behind, do you make sure they catch up? This is bigger than FFA. Finding a balance between self-sufficiency and being a team player will allow you to thrive in all aspects of life.

In Southmont’s 52 years of having an agriculture program, it has received 62 state titles in CDE competitions, numerous personal achievements and recognition as a high-performing chapter. As a team and chapter, they are Southmont FFA.
