This year, seven officers from the Tennessee FFA Association participated in ILSSO.

Each year, the National FFA Organization provides a unique and transformative experience for a select group of state officers through the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers (ILSSO). This prestigious and competitive program, which accepts only 75 state officers from across the United States each year, allows participants to expand their leadership skills, gain a global perspective on agriculture and immerse themselves in cultural experiences.

By stepping beyond U.S. borders, officers witness firsthand innovations, challenges and successes that shape the agriculture industry worldwide. Members of the 2025 ILSSO cohort embarked on an unforgettable journey to Spain and Portugal, where they explored agriculture practices, engaged with industry leaders and deepened their understanding of international trade and food production.

Representing Tennessee

This year, the Tennessee FFA Association sent seven state officers to participate in ILSSO, providing them with an incredible opportunity to expand their knowledge and leadership skills on an international stage.

Representing their home state, these officers engaged with fellow members from across the country and brought back valuable insights to share with their chapters and communities. Their experiences in Spain and Portugal will help shape the future of agricultural education and leadership in Tennessee.

Agricultural Insights

During the seminar, participants visited a variety of agricultural operations, gaining insight about how different regions adapt to unique climates and resources.

In Spain, they explored olive and vineyard farms, where they learned about the intricate process of olive oil and wine production. These industries play a crucial role in Spain’s economy, with the country being one of the largest olive oil producers in the world. Visiting these farms provided an appreciation for the hard work and precision required to cultivate high-quality products.

Portugal offered another fascinating agricultural landscape, particularly in the cork industry. Participants toured cork oak plantations and witnessed the meticulous process of harvesting and processing cork, a sustainable and vital export for Portugal. Additionally, they explored livestock operations, where they learned about cattle and swine production practices that differ from those in the United States due to climate, land availability and consumer demand.

Leadership and Cultural Experiences

Beyond providing agricultural education, ILSSO also emphasized leadership development through networking opportunities and exposure to new cultures. Participants met with industry professionals, government officials and farmers who shared their experiences and perspectives related to international agricultural trade and policies. These conversations expanded their understanding of how global markets operate and how international relations impact the food industry.

Cultural immersion was another key aspect of the trip. From walking through historic cities like Madrid and Lisbon to tasting traditional dishes such as paella and bacalhau, participants embraced the rich histories and customs of Spain and Portugal. These experiences underscored the importance of understanding and appreciating cultural diversity, a skill that is essential for effective leadership in a globalized world.

Transformation

ILSSO is more than just a travel opportunity; it’s a life-changing experience that shapes future leaders in agriculture. By stepping beyond their comfort zones and witnessing agriculture on a global scale, participants developed a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of the industry and the role they play in its future. For those who dream of making an impact in agriculture, ILSSO is an unparalleled opportunity to gain knowledge, build connections and grow as leaders.
