Did you know that the eastern region hosts the only FFA regional competition in the country?
Every September, hundreds of members travel to Springfield, Mass., to compete in FFA Career Development Events (CDE) and Leadership Development Events (LDE), as well as participate in numerous other events. If a team or individual qualifies in their CDE or LDE, they are granted the opportunity to compete during the opening on Friday and Saturday of the seventh largest fair in North America: the Big E. This event provides a unique opportunity for members of the eastern region to get in extra practice before the National FFA Convention & Expo, which is run similarly to what they would expect in the national event the following month.
According to Robert Eselby of the Connecticut Association, students feel “more confident in their abilities” to perform at the national level after competing in the regional event.”
Stars of the Show
Those who received a Star Battery Award in their home state when receiving their state FFA degree are also invited to participate in the Stars Recognition Program. Sponsored by Farm Credit East, this annual event recognizes the incredible members who exemplify Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) and dedication to their communities. Recipients of this award participate in additional interviews and a ceremony for the chance to be recognized as the top star in one of four categories: Star Agribusiness, Star Agriscience, Star Farmer and Star Agricultural Placement.
Empowering Today’s Leaders
Beyond competitions, the eastern regional event also grants state officers another opportunity to continue getting involved. Whether it be setting up for competitions, serving in the courtesy corps, or simply compiling binders for other volunteers, there is no doubt that this event would not have been possible without the help of state officers. Additionally, association presidents can participate in a more in-depth role through the State FFA Presidents Internship to find their voice in FFA.
“[It’s] rewarding to see we may have played a small part as an intern into something that is larger,” said Emily Coon, New Hampshire Association’s president, reflecting on her time as an intern.
