Depew FFA is always looking for ways to educate elementary school kids about agriculture. During National FFA Week, the Oklahoma chapter hosted a program for the youth of its community.

Created by Oklahoma State University’s Ferguson College of Agriculture, “Farm to You” is designed to teach pre-K through fifth-grade students about agriculture and health topics. These include subjects like farming in Oklahoma, farmer’s markets, the mouth, the intestines, the bones and the brain. Each topic is taught at a separate booth, which students cycle through, allowing them to absorb all the knowledge they can from the event. This program enriches agricultural education through the community and advocates for the local FFA chapter.

On Monday, Feb. 17, Depew FFA took over the Depew Elementary School gymnasium and transformed it into an agricultural education center with the help of  OSU Ferguson College of Agriculture representatives. The following Tuesday, 16 FFA members helped with different facets of the event. Most members worked in groups and presented subjects. Others led groups through the event, working to keep everything running smoothly.

As a result of this event, the chapter has reached more potential members than ever before. Connecting with younger generations helps shed a positive light on FFA and hopefully encourages more students to consider agricultural classes and FFA when the time comes to become members.

This event has also shed light on agriculture to community members who interact with these young people daily. This publicity will help not only the chapter but also agriculturists, farmers and ranchers within the area.

By hosting the “Farm to You” event and other activities, Depew FFA achieved the goals and values associated with FFA Week. OSU and the work of members have made all of these and more possible. Without their involvement and hard work, the lasting community impacts would not be possible.
