Building Your Way Up
For many years, Dyer County High School in Tennessee has been well-known for its horticultural program within its FFA and agriculture pathway. Every student has the opportunity to serve in the greenhouse and landscaping projects. People from all over West Tennessee adore the hard work and dedication that goes into this pathway.
Makenzie Williams has been head of the horticultural pathway for three years. She has given her students many opportunities to find a passion in plant science or even agriculture. These students help Williams showcase the beauty and hard work that takes place in the greenhouse and landscapes around the school.
Growing a Passion
Students help and gain knowledge about plants as they work in the greenhouse and flower beds year-round. They start to develop a passion and love for helping ensure all the plants are well taken care of and accomplish all the responsibilities as they come.
Students take on many responsibilities to help maintain the plant science program. Some students even develop a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) and an agriscience fair project to continue doing what they love or do research to gain more experience and knowledge.
Growing in the County
Dyer County FFA members have accomplished the meaning of “Living to Serve,” which is incredible. They strive to showcase the support to build up for the Dyer County FFA annual plant sale, and to help keep around the schools and community.
The organizational leadership and communications class received the opportunity to travel to the Carl Perkins Center to help remodel the flower bed to make sure visitors were satisfied with the environment and landscape.
Also, the greenhouse volunteers have done a tremendous job of keeping the upkeep and beauty of Dyer County High School’s flower bed. They have taken upon this responsibility to help keep the school looking top-notch when there are football games, FFA events and more. Community members are amazed by their hard work and dedication.
The plant sale is a big showcase to show community members the hard work and success these students have planned. Williams and the students are amazed by the smiles and support from the community as their plants are being bought. As people started to travel their way to the plant sale, these students were still serving to help community members as they shop at the sale.
Dyer County FFA has truly expressed “Living to Serve,” within the plant science pathway as they continue to grow and succeed, these members never forget to serve within their community as they pursue what they love to do.
