In preparation for National Ag Day on March 21, think about how you might answer potential questions consumers have about agriculture. Riley Pagett, the director of advocacy and government relations for the National FFA Organization, provides some ideas. Is agriculture still relevant? Do farmers still exist? Now more than ever, the world needs people pursuing careers in agriculture to feed, fuel and clothe a growing population. Not only do farmers and ranchers help achieve those goals, but there are 235 unique careers in the science, business and technology sectors of agriculture. We encourage FFA members to provide consumers with specific examples or stories about their agricultural pursuits – or about an agriculturist they know in the industry. Heading to College? An Ag Degree Could Land You a Job

A recent survey reports that students getting ready to enter the workforce are often overlooking one of the top hiring sectors – agriculture. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, employers have nearly 60,000 job openings in agriculture annually, but only 35,000 students with the proper training and education to fill these jobs. In fact, only 3 percent of students recognize the agriculture industry as a top hiring sector. Thankfully, today’s agriculture industry offers a wide array of career paths for individuals with interest in technology, science, education, agriculture and business – among other fields. From agriculture economists, to crop consultants and engineers, experts in multiple fields are needed to feed the world’s growing population. To help close this gap, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, is awarding scholarships to help develop the next generation of agriculture leaders.
