Hankinson, N.D., has a population of less than 1,000 people. In this small town, most families are farmers. It also just gained an FFA chapter, which helps students who may not come from a farming family learn more about agriculture.

“One thing that I have learned a lot through FFA and agriculture classes is how to process food,” says Hankinson FFA Historian Shylin Medenwaldt.

Led by advisor Cohl Ringer, the Hankinson FFA leadership team (pictured above) includes President Kenadi David, Vice President Denver Nelson, Secretary Adryanna Sterling, Treasurer Ella Peterson, Reporter Karsyn Bladow, Sentinel Berkeley Bohnenstingl, Historian Shylin Medenwaldt and Student Advisor Andrew Jean.

“Through FFA, I have learned how to use tools properly and safely,” Medenwaldt said.

Hankison FFA has done many things in the years since it was established. The chapter held a bean bag tournament to raise money for Farm Rescue and an assembly during National FFA Week. Additionally, the chapter held a pumpkin carving contest and offered pumpkin painting during the local Oktoberfest.

The chapter also likes to get involved with the elementary classes by inviting them to the agriculture building to try mock competitions, hatch eggs, and learn how to stay safe.

Above all, having an agriculture program in this small town has been a great way for students to learn to do new things they thought they couldn’t do. “With the help of my advisor, I have learned how to weld better and the proper ways to weld,” says Hankinson FFA member Dagean Bevere.
