Thanks to a scholarship, Native American FFA members can attend Week Five of the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC). The Native Youth in Agriculture and the Tribal Agriculture Fellowship organization sponsor FFA members with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend this national-level conference.
WLC takes place in Washington, D.C., and provides summer leadership opportunities for more than 2,000 FFA members each year. One key concept of WLC is helping members learn how to “do what we can, with what we have, where we are” while also developing a Living to Serve Plan to bring back to their communities. Through receiving the Native American scholarship, FFA members dive deeper and learn about the Native American cultural impact on the agriculture industry.
“I had a wonderful experience at WLC,” says Lumberton FFA member and Native American scholarship recipient Nevaeh Locklear. “I learned how to grow as a leader and as a person. I made a lot of friends on this trip and got to step out of my comfort zone. I also learned how I can incorporate more Native American culture into the agriculture industry, such as by including Native American foods in our schools. Overall, my favorite part of this experience was having the opportunity of meeting other Native American members like me as well as learning about the different tribes and how we are all different, but also the same in many ways.”
Overall, the scholarship given by the Tribal Agriculture Fellowship and the Native Youth in Agriculture organization provides FFA members with this unique leadership opportunity that will impact their futures. Click here to read more about how to apply for this scholarship.
