As a sophomore in high school, my sights were set on becoming the next Mexico FFA Chapter secretary. I poured into the application process and left my interview feeling confident. So, imagine my surprise when I opened a text message reading, “Congratulations! You’ve been selected as our chapter’s newest reporter.”
At the time, receiving this news represented a goal unreached and a dream that didn’t come to fruition. Today, however, I’m grateful for the redirection it provided.
By serving as reporter, I recognized how my upbringing in agriculture overlapped with my interest in communications. Writing articles for my local newspaper, snapping pictures at events and managing my chapter’s social media pages also helped me learn important lessons like finding joy — and even purpose — in the unexpected.
Between starting a new calendar year, wrapping up another spring semester and planning summer festivities, this time of year is filled with lots of changes, but also exciting possibilities. Perhaps you’re preparing to attend an FFA camp or conference, travel abroad or begin your first year of college later in the fall.
Regardless of the season of life you’re in, this themed issue was designed with you in mind. We sought to fill these pages with stories that spotlight how FFA equips its members, alumni, supporters and more to find their futures in agriculture — and how it can do the same for you.
“Make48 Competitors Convert Ideas Into Solutions” showcases the real-world applications of competing in Leadership and Career Development Events. Explore exclusive member-created content that showcases outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experiences in “SAEs in the USA.” Finally, read about how Nate Jackson (“Hat’s Off to This Alum,”), Caitlin Cox (“Alumna Makes Magic Happen,”) and Cory Reinle (“On the Record,”) all found their current careers thanks to their FFA experiences.
More than anything, I wish I could tell 16-year-old Lauren that her future would hold something far greater than what she envisioned for it at the time. Nearly 10 years after that pivotal moment I experienced as a member, I can see with full clarity how it led me to where I am today, and I wish you the best as you pave your own path in agriculture and FFA.
