For the past six years, the Crest Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in Kansas has made a name for itself with its annual chili cook-off, a fun-filled event that not only celebrates culinary creativity, but also supports important community causes.
This year, the competition took on a heartfelt new mission, serving up not just bowls of delicious chili, but also much-needed assistance for a local teacher facing medical expenses.
“Seeing the community come together is why we started this event six years ago,” says Caitlin Callaway, Crest FCCLA advisor and a family and consumer sciences (FCS) teacher. “When we first started hosting the chili cook-off, it was in an attempt to give our community members a fun fall evening of togetherness. This year was extra special, as we witnessed the community unite to show great support for someone who is very important in many people’s lives.”
The cook-off attracted many competitors, each eager to showcase their skills with both traditional and non-traditional chili recipes that ranged from sweet and spicy to traditional. Among the competitors this year was the Crest FFA officer team.
“It brought me so much joy to see other organizations joining in and participating in the chili cook-off,” Callaway says. “It really went to show how our fundraising efforts from this event were supporting a cause that is truly near and dear to all of us. In our small school, many students are involved in multiple Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), which I believe fosters well-rounded individuals with lots of leadership experiences.”
Competitors were given an hour and 15 minutes to make their culinary creations during the chili cook-off, then attendees sampled the homemade dishes and cast their votes. Bowls of chili were available for purchase, complementing the festive atmosphere that also featured a pumpkin decorating contest and a pumpkin pie competition.
At the conclusion of the cook-off, organizers announced that the community had collectively raised a substantial amount toward the teacher’s medical bills, strengthening the sense of community and kindness that will continue to grow and unite under the common goal of “Living to Serve.”
