Each year, Upshur County FFA in West Virginia plans a Back-to-School Hoorah to engage new and old members. A hoorah is an exciting informal event with food and games held during the first month back to school and is planned by chapter officers. Upshur County FFA officers dedicate their time and energy to ensuring everyone feels included, which is an essential part of this community event since members, friends, family, and supporters are invited.
The 2024 hoorah consisted of games, prizes, and a baked potato bar. Games included bingo, tug-of-war, a dress-up contest, water toss, sponge run and giant Jenga. Each game was picked carefully so both parents and members could participate. The baked potato bar had many toppings to choose from and members and parents brought covered dishes, so people had a selection of food.
Upshur County FFA believes it is important to keep members active through fun engagements. Jamison Gambrazzio says, “The hoorah had so many fun things to do and gave me a chance to meet new people.” By giving members a more relaxed and inviting environment to speak in front of peers and meet new people within the chapter, members are more likely to attend meetings.
In conclusion, the hoorah is an important tradition that helps give members a sense of community and belonging. By offering a relaxed environment with fun activities, food and the opportunity to meet new people, the event encourages participation and engagement within the chapter. Through this event, FFA continues to strengthen its bonds and promote lasting friendships.
