The newly elected Brawley FFA officer team kicked off the 2024-25 school year by packing their bags and heading to Big Bear, Calif., for a two-day retreat. This trip was about learning to work together and lead the chapter in the upcoming year.
To kick things off, Brawley FFA Advisor Michelle Taylor emphasized the importance of the retreat.
“We do [it] to ensure the team knows their responsibilities and is prepared to lead our chapter with confidence,” she says. “It’s crucial that they understand how to work together and support each other.”
Unplugged for Connection
Here’s the catch: no phones, no social media and no distractions. The officers were offline for two days.
At first, it seemed tough. But without technology, they had to talk and build relationships. As a result, they quickly discovered the value of direct communication.
Engaging Team Challenges
One of the biggest moments of the retreat was the escape room challenge. The officers teamed up to solve puzzles and beat the clock, thinking fast and communicating effectively. Fortunately, they made it out just in time.
Another highlight was the baking challenge, where the team created a dessert under pressure. This activity taught them not just how to bake but also how to collaborate.
Growing Together
“I didn’t know what to expect, but it was actually really fun,” says Brawley FFA officer Audree Callens. “We’re all way closer now, and it showed me how much we need to trust each other to lead the chapter.”
Ultimately, the retreat was more than just planning events; it built connections to help the officers work together throughout the year. With no distractions and plenty of teamwork, the officers left Big Bear excited and ready to tackle the challenges of leading their chapter ahead.
