The Lebanon FFA Chapter in Indiana is baking with a purpose.
Earlier this year, the chapter held a monthly meeting dedicated to finding meaningful ways to support the Boone County Humane Society. In a heartwarming effort, members crafted homemade dog treats and toys to benefit this worthy cause.
“Being able to help the dogs who don’t have an actual home, specifically Boone, who used to be a therapy dog at school,” reflects the mission behind their efforts.
Former therapy dog Boone continues to inspire Lebanon FFA members.
Although Boone may no longer visit Lebanon High School, his legacy continues to inspire FFA members to show appreciation for the wonderful memories he provided.
“When we think of needs, we usually go straight to people’s needs, but there’s more than people within our community,” says Breanna Stratton, committee chairman and event director. “Giving back to nonprofits is important, too.”
The Humane Society of Boone County (HSforBC) is a volunteer-driven organization committed to animal welfare, rescue and education throughout Boone County, Ind. Their dedicated volunteers organize numerous events each year to engage the community and help pets find their forever homes. Notable events include:
- The Fur Ball.
- A festive Mardi Gras-themed party.
- The Golf Scramble, where participants can enjoy a day of golfing alongside lovable shelter animals.
- A 5K run/walk through downtown Whitestown, Ind., that embraces the Halloween spirit for pets and their owners.
- Whisker Fest, a pet-friendly craft show featuring opportunities for furry friends to snap photos with Santa and shop for holiday gifts.
These events play a crucial role in raising funds to support the humane society’s ongoing mission.
Baking it Forward
Lebanon FFA applied for and received a Living to Serve grant, which helped cover the financial aspect of their service project. Additionally, they encouraged individuals at Lebanon High School to donate unused T-shirts and promote sustainability by repurposing them into dog toys. Members gathered to cut and knot the shirts, creating fun and engaging toys for the animals.
Throughout the meeting, Lebanon FFA members were able to bond with each other and share laughter while making treats and toys for the humane society. Participating members were split up into groups and given instructions based on each station. This allowed members to deepen their connections with each other through service involvement.

There are numerous ways to get involved within your local humane society. Fostering pets, volunteering your time and shopping for items off a wish list are just a few of the ways you can continue to support humane society efforts.
The Lebanon FFA Chapter hopes to continue finding ways to support the humane society and various nonprofits around the area.
