Gabriela López, a member of the Dra. María Socorro Lacot FFA Chapter in Guayama, Puerto Rico, developed a deep passion for agriculture through her involvement with FFA.

At 15 years old, her interest in agriculture was sparked by her advisor, Agro. Marisela Carbonell, who encouraged her to pursue her own project. During the pandemic, López chose to focus her SAE on raising free-cage laying hens and selling their eggs.

“My inspiration for this SAE came from my advisor, who was key in helping me fall in love with this wonderful organization,” she says. “As I learned more about FFA and its mission, I developed a deep interest in agriculture and animals, which led me to a strong desire to learn more about the field.”

Over time, López’s passion for agriculture grew, leading to the establishment of GABY’S EGG FARM. What began with just 10 hens has now expanded to 100 laying hens, producing around 14,000 eggs annually.

“GABY’S EGGS FARM was established in March 2021 as my [Supervised Agricultural Experience] SAE project,” López says. “This company is dedicated to the care and raising of free-cage laying hens and the sale of their eggs. As my love for this project grew, so did the farm. The business is gradually becoming known in my community.”

López’s hard work has brought her significant recognition and rewards. In 2022, she was featured in the calendar of Selectos, one of Puerto Rico’s largest supermarket chains. That same year, she received two scholarships: $800 from Selectos and $200 from Corteva. These funds helped her invest in and expand her business.

“With this business, I aspire for it to be recognized throughout my country and for my product to reach everyone,” López says. “I want to express my passion for agriculture and inspire other young agribusiness owners to pursue their dreams. Together, we can convey one of the most important messages: Agriculture is not a thing of the past, but rather the present and future of our world.”
