Convention Attendees Tour Stoops Training Academy

As part of the 23 Career Success Tours offered during this the 97th National FFA Convention & Expo, members had the opportunity to explore the Stoops Training Academy in Indianapolis. Part of the McCoy Group, the academy offers a specialized three-year technical curriculum designed to launch successful careers in the trucking industry. The program aligns with the FFA mission of hands-on career development and education, offering members an in-depth look at career opportunities in the Power, Structural, and Technical Systems pathway.

Kevin Schillinger, marketing specialist at McCoy Group, highlights how the academy provides FFA members with a direct path to becoming skilled technicians.

“FFA’s mission of development and education really aligns with our training program,” Schillinger explains. “Many of these students come in without much experience, but by the end of the program, they become master-level Freightliner technicians. When they return to their home dealerships, they’ll be some of the most knowledgeable technicians in their departments. This program gives them a great opportunity to grow within our company and even pursue leadership roles.”

The Stoops Training Academy offers a small classroom environment with personalized instruction, providing students with the tools and knowledge to succeed in the technical field. For FFA members who enjoy working with equipment and solving technical challenges, the program offers a promising career path.

Hands-On Experience for FFA Members

Schillinger emphasizes how well the program fits FFA members’ interests and strengths.

“FFA members are typically hands-on learners who like to work with equipment. College is a great option for some, but for those who prefer to be on their feet, turn wrenches and learn engines, our program is a perfect fit,” Schillinger says.

Members on the tour had the chance to visit five different training stations, learning about the skills required to become a Freightliner Certified Technician. One member, Sage Grossnickle from Maryland, says the tour pushed her out of her comfort zone but left a lasting impression.

“During my first year at the convention, I didn’t take any tours, but now I wish I had done this all four years,” Grossnickle says. “It helps you prepare and really pushes you outside your comfort zone. It’s the best thing you can do at the convention.”

“We’re looking forward to seeing the excitement on students’ faces,” Schillinger says. “We always aim to create a fun environment and motivate students to explore their career aspirations with us.”
